Kalles Inn

Some homework for me. I say homework as I’ve been given the task of taking photographs of Kalles Inn for the new website. These are a few shots from my workplace Kalle’s Inn. Here is one of 4 restaurant buildings we have on the area. This is a traditional Lapland Kota building. Here we can seat up to 60 persons and there is overnight accommodation for 12 persons. The menu we mostly serve in this building is a Cream Soup of Finnish Chantarelle Mushrooms followed buy Finnish Salmon that’s roasted in front of the fire as you can see in the 4th image. For dessert we serve a Vanilla Creme brulee topped with Finnish Cloudberries. As of late i have been introducing more and more main dishes into the menu by roasting Wild Boar, Beef Inner Fillet, Moose Inner fillet and once a whole piglet for a medieval themed wedding! The roof of this building has small fiber optic lights that make up the star sky from the night it was built. The first and second image were taken on Aperture priority at f5.6-f8 using a Polorizer Filter. The third and forth images were taken on fully manual f8 at 40′ second.

The next image is another of the restaurant buildings on the area. This is a little special. It is shaped like a lighthouse! It has a Wood Burning aitokiuas Sauna that can sit 10 – 15 persons and a wood burning hot tub outside that can sit 8-10 persons. On the Third floor there is a restaurant that can sit 8-12 persons. This is the ideal place to spend the months of the midnight sun.

For the image i used an ND filter taken at f20 at 25 seconds plus a polarizing filter. Minor adjustments in Photoshop again and for my eyes, this image is perfect. How about yours?

The Krisp Kalm Kvarken.

I finally get to post my images taken a few weeks back. There was no work for the weekend so what do we do? Pack up way too much stuff, and stay at our work place overnight. Well, it was Eurovision Night. Yeah, i know, how sad is that? Well its an excuse for the family to get together and laugh and joke and make fun of the artists performing! We arrived there pretty early in the day so i decided i would venture out to see what shots i could get. It was extremely still and the water was so calm! Here is a Google map shot From where i was shooting if your at all interested.

There are some great locations to shoot around this area and over the summer, i will hope to get as much done as i possibly can. OK , back to the photo’s. I love the effect on the water in these shots! Looks as if you can walk across it all the way to Sweden! These shots were taken around noon time using my Nd110 filter. I think I’m using this a little too much now but I’m really enjoying it! Only a slight Photoshop adjustment needed for each of these. I was using my polorizer filter along with the ND so i was ending up with a touch of vignetting only at the top of the image. So i just cropped out that if i did not want to use it and then just a slight exposure adjustment in each. Also, obviously, i processed 2 shots into black and white which I think work really well.

There’s enough chit chat now so time for the images! I would love to hear what you think off them in the comments section. Good or Bad, criticism is invaluable and much needed and appreciated!

HDR Construction

Images taken at Klobskatt harbour this morning. I was on my way into work when i saw the excavator with the sun behind it and thought ‘CLICK’ just had to stop and take this. I kindly asked Mox (Auf Weidershen Pet) If i could take these images, he grumbled and turned, took out his phone and probably pretended to talk to someone on there….usual behavior in these remote areas of Raipollottu. Then the other image is that of a Fork Lift truck that has been sitting pretty for the last 4-5 months due to the blasted snow…my god have we had enough of it this winter!

Ski Doo and the 3 S’ HDR

Well. Needless to say, ive had Oodles of fun today with Photoshop. Here’s too HDR images that i shot today. After a few days of bad luck with the weather, today was fantastic. Looked out the window when i awoke and thought, clear blue sky’s, sun’s out…..’Camera Time’. Took my camera to work and went off shooting after i had finished slaving over a hot stove! Finnish winter means ONE thing. Well it means a whole heap of things, but we wont get into that just yet, SKI DOO. Those fantastically and dangerously fast mothers are parked outside our work place, more or less from January to April. Guests from all over the world, come to our establishment to experience the thrill of these beauties! Great for me as they are so much fun to shoot, and even better to turn into HDR.  The next image is of my Brother in Law. He works outside constantly, heating traditional Finnish ‘Smoke Saunas’. My god the Finns are proud of these….go figure?! As i was out taking photos he walked up to me, i saw the reflection in his sunglasses and instantly started snapping…Great shot, even better in HDR, and as you will see in my next post, much better in…………?

Peculiar Day In HDR

Ok. Strange day today. Typical, yesterday there was sun and clear blue skys. The snow had started to melt and the ground glistened. So i thought to myself “Whatever i do tomorrow, I must take my camera with me”. So as usual, i had to work that tomorrow. So i set off a little earlier to work, camera in hand and a pair of warm gloves, hoping to catch some great shots. Disaster. The melting snow had turned into treacherous slush, those crisp clear blue sky’s had turned a dirty grey colour, and Mr Sun must have gone on a Thompson all inclusive holiday to Greece or somewhere far far away! So instead i was on the look out for some interesting shots. But there was no available light that interested me as the sun was on strike and as for things being interesting well, i have a 40 minute drive to work and all there is is trees, trees and more trees! But on this day, i had to stop at the Bakery to drop off some plastic boxes that i had been holding onto for no reason. The perspective on these shots just drew me straight into taking the shots. Again, as with most of my pictures, there is a touch of HDR going on. I guess i need the practice, im not HDRs biggest fan, but the more i do, the more it grows on me. One shot is more natural looking and one well, I think I let loose on it. I like the both of them, taking into consideration the crapness of the day. But im glad i took my camera with me, and im glad that i took the time to take these photos. What do you think of them?

High Dynamic Cookie

February 13, 2011 Leave a comment

More cookies!…This time in HDR. Im not the biggest user of hdr and im not really too confident in doing it. This is merged and processed in Photoshop, used from 5 exposures at +1. Love the final image to be honest, just the right amount of processing for my taste.

‘Finger in the Cookie Jar’

February 13, 2011 Leave a comment

Cookies. Home made Cookies. There is nothing better. Especially these ones. Pecan nut and Milk chocolate cookies. These bad boys helped me gain 5kg over the Christmas holidays! But, they are my wife’s speciality….im just lucky that they taste so bloody good so I dont mind scoffing the whole batch the day they are made!….. Its cold outside today….AGAIN….around minus 20 something, and wont change for a long time! So i decided to take some pictures by the window in the morning sun of stuff i had lying around….and the cookies were just staring at me, not anymore mind as after the morning session, i ate the damn lot! Took this using my Nikon nifty 50, which is PERMANENTLY attached to my camera now. 1 / 30 of a second and at iso 100. However, this was such a simple shot when taken, just your every day picture. But its the shot that I’ve used Photoshop the most with. Finally figured out how to use the Burn tools and I think its been used pretty well here!….But, Sunday night tonight, which usually means movie night……” Wife, we need more cookies”……
